justjlogo.jpgDear Just J,I was hoping you could give me some advice. I am starting a new recruiting job in a small staffing office outside of Ohio. I am nervous about trying to fit in with such an already “tight-knit” team. Do you have any suggestions?Thanks,- Eager to fit inDear Eager,Don’t fret, my friend! Everyone has been the “newbie” before. But, my answer to your question can also transcend to not just people new to a company, but even someone who’s been at the same desk for 15 years! You see, Eager, it’s not so much about “fitting in” as it is being a team player. By being a gratious, honest, hardworking person (which I am sure you already are!), you will automatically become someone that your company can trust, utilize, and respect.Much too often, we encounter people who will stop at nothing to “win”. And, when I say “win”, I mean they will step on anyone to make themselves look good. We can all spot these types from a mile away. Now, Eager, I know you can’t possibly be one of these types. So, let’s focus on how you can become an awesome team player at your new job!Do’s:Be generous and willing to collaborate: The “it’s all mine” syndrome is a a hard habit to break, but in order for you to build team unity, you must always be willing to work with other team members and give them credit where it’s due.Honesty: Make the decision to always do what you think is right. Stay out of the negativity, be open to praise your co-workers, and own up to a mistake (hey, we’re human!).Respect others: Yes, it’s kinda the Golden Rule. Treat your co-workers the way you’d like to be treated.Be an active listener: Be interested in other people’s ideas, theories, projects. Don’t just suck up all the air with your words — pay attention to the people around you! Listen to them the same way you’d like to be listened to.Appreciate them: The best time to compliment someone is in front of a group of people! Honestly, a sincere compliment regarding a great sales win, a terrific presentation, etc., in front of a group of people can literally change the receipent’s day, week, maybe even life. Realize your potential to make others happy. It’s a big, big deal! Be a clarifier: If you’re confused on the direction of a project or idea, your co-workers are probably too. Be the one who asks for an explanation. You’ll be appreciated for it.Be flexible: Having your way all the time makes co-workers very annoyed. Be open and flexible to change and using others’ ideas. So, there you go, Eager; some simple tips and tricks to help you easily feel comfortable and succeed at your new position.Remember: be appreciative, be honest, be trustworthy, be kind.To success, Just J.
